10 years ago when I was a Boca Raton resident, I loved craft beer but there weren’t a lot of places to go and drink it and certainly not many breweries. At the time it was pretty much just the original Funky Buddha location that had just started brewing their own beer. Fast forward a decade later and now there are lots of breweries popping up all over South Florida including the latest addition to Boca Raton; Crazy Uncle Mike’s.
Formerly working in hotel hospitality, the owner Mike Goodwin (Uncle Mike) opened this music-centric brewpub after recognizing the need for a venue in Boca Raton that offers good food, good beer, and good music. To make this trio of offerings come to life, he brought on Chef Tara Abrams (formerly Jey Hospitality) and brewmaster Corey Wilson and launched this concept which opened in the fall of 2018.
(L) CRISPY BURRATA SALAD – ARUGULA, CHERRY TOMATO CONFIT, VINCOTTO
Although it does say “crispy” on the menu, I wasn’t expecting fried arugula. Somehow this dish tasted Asian-inspired to me, maybe some soy sauce? I think it was supposed to be Italian-inspired. Either way, for me, this dish was lost in translation.
(R) PURPLE POTATO SKINS- BACON, SUNDRIED TOMATO CREME FRAICHE, ROE
I was really excited to see purple potato skins on the menu, I just wish the skins were crispier. The sauce made it a little bit watery. Good in concept but not execution.
O.D.B – ENGLISH STYLE OATMEAL PORTER 5.5% ABV – Sweet caramel and rich nutty flavors build the backbone to this ale, balanced by chocolate.
My husband and I both had one of these and we enjoyed it. We also tried a freshly tapped IPA.
LOCAL FISH SANDWICH – KEY LIME TARTAR SAUCE, LETTUCE, TOMATO, ONION, AVOCADO, ON BRIOCHE BUN
This was my entree, I opted for no-bun. The fish was good, and so were the fries. I really liked the key lime spin on the tartar sauce.
GRILLED SKIRT STEAK – SERVED WITH YUCCA MASH, CHILI RUBBED BABY CARROTS, CHIMICHURRI
This was my husbands dish and I tasted it. The steak was cooked nicely and the dish was flavorful. However, he mentioned that he didn’t detect any chili rub on the carrots.
For dessert we tried the layered tiramisu infused with coffee porter. It was a tasty finish to our meal. Although it started off rocky with the appetizers, I would give this place another try. I’d like to visit again to check out the live music, try some of the other beers, and find a favorite menu item.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary tasting at Crazy Uncle Mikes. All opinions are my own.
