Mellow Mushroom South Miami recently opened its doors at the Shops at Sunset Place. Mellow Mushroom pizza chain features creative and tasty pizzas, hoagies, salads, desserts and craft beers. Mellow is also known for its gluten-free pizza as well as its full vegetarian and vegan menus. Vegans can even indulge in Mellow pizza, as the restaurant uses Daiya “cheese” in substitution for dairy cheese. Essentially if you have a food allergy, dietary restriction or preference, no matter how strict, you can have your pizza and eat it too at Mellow Mushroom!
Chef Salad –
Romaine and iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots, red cabbage, onions, cucumbers, green peppers, mushrooms, Kalamata olives, Roma tomatoes, mozzarella, ham and sprouts.
I liked the Mellow Mushroom take on a chef salad. The balsamic vinaigrette was really good. The dressing was recommended by our waiter. I also tried the Caesar dressing which didnt really have the distinct Caesar taste.
Pretzels-
Fresh Mellow dough twisted into pretzels: Garlic butter and Parmesan, with a side of red sauce, Butter and Kosher salt, with a side of mustard, or Cinnamon sugar and honey.
Meatball Trio-
Three meatballs grilled with fresh mozzarella on a bed of red sauce with shaved Parmesan cheese and basil, sprinkled with breadcrumbs.
Nice presentation on the meatballs – mozzarella stuffed, mmm. Meatballs are often a mix of different meats. In this case, they are 100% beef.
Since I am already familiar with a favorite of mine – the Kosmic Karma pizza (Red sauce base with feta and mozzarella cheeses, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and Roma tomatoes with a pesto swirl) I tried two other pizzas on my visit to Mellow Mushroom South Miami that I havent tried before. Red Skin Potato Pie (left) Maui Wowie (right).
Red Skin Potato Pie-
Olive oil & garlic base with sliced roasted red potatoes, Applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Garnished with chives then drizzled with sour cream & spicy ranch dressing.
A little bit on the spicy side, rich in taste and so yummy!
Mowie Wowie-
Pesto base with ham, pineapple, jerk chicken, banana peppers, Applewood smoked bacon & mozzarella cheese.
Interesting take on a Hawaiian pizza, nice sweet taste coming from the pineapple ham and banana peppers with a spicy contrast from the jerk chicken.
We decided to order this one on a gluten free crust. It was a nice change from the doughy dense goodness from the classic crust on the other pizza. I liked the GF crust, its not one of those GF options that one would taste and say ok this is gluten free. It is simply a thin crust / flat bread type of alternative.
Finishing off the evening with a Raspberry Beret cocktail
Local Miami influence reflects when looking at the bar area:
The service was phenomenal. The waiter did know that we were bloggers which may have contributed to the attentiveness. However, Ryan was very genuine and thats for sure. My friend Karina who was with me made a great observation about the teamwork demonstrated by the staff. We noticed that as a whole, everyone including the manager, takes part in seating and clearing off tables or jumping in to help out where needed – an attribute essential to a good dining experience.
The restaurant is open late night, until midnight Sunday-Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday – Saturday. The restaurant also features Miami’s first self-serve tap bar, featuring 4 rotating craft beer brands and flavors. In total, Mellow serves over 54 different types of local and national craft brews, including gluten-free options.
